salon

Any of the annual exhibitions of artworks held in france. Often, today, the term is used negatively to describe the exhibitions of the mid-nineteenth century of traditional, formulaic art works that appealed to a wealthy, unimaginative clientele. Also, the term is often used to describe periodic gatherings of artists and intellectuals in private spaces for discussion and entertainment.
